OM, also known as 'Aum', holds profound significance in Hinduism as the most sacred syllable, symbol, and mantra. It represents the essence of ultimate reality and consciousness. Referred to as the Shabda-Brahman, it is considered the primordial sound. This syllable is often chanted independently or before other mantras. Its presence extends beyond Hinduism, encompassing Jainism, Buddhism, and Sikhism as well.
The syllable OM is also recognized as onkara (ओङ्कार, oṅkāra), omkara (ओंकार, oṃkāra), and pranava (प्रणव, praṇava).
Throughout history, OM has been prominently displayed in ancient and medieval manuscripts, temples, monasteries, and spiritual retreats associated with Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. While it carries spiritual significance across all Indian dharmas, specific interpretations and connotations of OM may vary among different traditions and within distinct schools of thought.
In Hinduism, OM holds tremendous spiritual value. It represents Atman (the soul or inner self) and Brahman (the ultimate reality encompassing the universe, truth, divinity, supreme spirit, cosmic principles, and knowledge). This syllable is frequently found at the beginning and end of chapters in the Vedas, Upanishads, and other sacred Hindu texts. It serves as a sacred incantation during the recitation of spiritual texts, during puja (worship) and personal prayers, in various rites of passage ceremonies (sanskara) such as weddings, and even during meditative and spiritual practices like Yoga.
